"Cat in the Hat" steals No. 1 at N. America box office
          ( 2003-11-24 15:30) (Xinhua)

Universal Pictures' comedy " The Cat in the Hat," loosely based on the children's book by Dr. Seuss, took the No. 1 spot at the North American box office over the weekend, according to studio estimates issued on Sunday.

The comedy, starring Mike Myers, took in US$40.1 million in its first weekend. Its opening pales against that of the previous Dr. Seuss movie, "How the Grinch Stole Christmas," which earned US$55.1 million in its 2000 release.

A low-budget thriller, "Gothika," released by Warner Bros. Pictures took the No. 2 position by grossing US$19.6 million. The film starred the Oscar-winning actress Halle Berry as a criminal psychologist who awakens one morning to find herself incarcerated in her own psychiatric ward.

Last weekend's champ, the New Line Cinema's Christmas comedy " Elf," fell to No. 3 with US$19.1 million in its third weekend. This brought to US$95.1 million its gross in three weeks after its release.

The 20 Century Fox ocean epic "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World," starring Oscar-winning actor Russell Crowe, slipped No. 4 with US$15.2 million in its second weekend, bringing its total to US$47.3 million in two weeks.

Rounding up the Top Five was the romantic comedy "Love Actually, " starring Hugh Grant and Emma Thompson, which took in US$9.1 million after expanding its theater count. The Universal Pictures movie has earned US$30.8 million after three weeks of release
