Bill Gates shows new Windows operating system
          ( 2003-10-28 14:03) (Agencies)

US software giant Microsoft offered a look Monday at its next version of Windows operating system, which promises new methods of storing files and tighter links to the Internet.

At Microsoft Professional Developers Conference in Los Angeles, the company's founder and Chairman Bill Gates showed the new Windows, code-named Longhorn, to outside software developers so they can begin writing new programs that will work with it.

Gates said Longhorn, when it arrives, would rank as Microsoft's largest software launch this decade and the biggest since its Windows 95 operating system.

But Gates did not offer a time frame for delivery of the new operating system. He said it still needs "years of work."

According to Gates, the new software's file storage system will let users search for information regardless of whether it resides in e-mail, spreadsheets, or word-processing documents. A user could search, for example, by author or project.

Another new feature in Longhorn is a vertical panel on the side of the screen that could include essential information at a glance, such as the time and date, links to favored Web sites or updated stock prices.

Microsoft also plans to add peer-to-peer networking technologies to let co-workers, for example, send documents to each other that they can jointly view and annotate.
