China's newspaper advertising revenue to hit new record
          ( 2003-10-22 23:32) (Xinhua)

Revenues from China's newspaper advertisements are expected to exceed 20 billion yuan (2.42 billion US dollars) in 2003, hitting a new record, according to sources with a seminar held Wednesday in this capital of east China's Jiangsu province.

Liang Qinjian, director of the newspaper committee of the China Advertising Association, said that China's newspaper advertising kept growing steadily in 2003 despite a negative impact resulting from the outbreak of the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), with a great number of newspapers reporting record high revenues.

Although facing competitions from network and television advertisements, some newly established newspapers have scored successes in selling their advertisements thanks to their clear market orientation, according to Liang.

Liang also urged newspapers across the country to better regulate their operation and provide more authentic information to their readerships.
