Coal mine mudflow leaves one dead, seven missing
          ( 2003-10-22 16:51) (Xinhua)

One miner died and seven are missing after a mudflow struck beneath the shaft of a colliery early Tuesday morning in Meihe City, northeast China's Jilin Province.

The mudflow struck at 5:46 a.m. Tuesday when 19 miners were working on the platform of the No. 3 shaft at the Meihe Coal Mine administered by the Liaoyuan Mining Affairs Administration, according to local sources.

The sources said that 11 workers escaped before the mudflow hit. The body of one miner was found.

A team consisting of officials from provincial coal industry administrative departments rushed to the site of the accident to organize rescue operations. Jiao Zhengzhong, deputy governor of Jilin Province, also arrived to give guidance in the rescue efforts.

By press time, rescue operations were still going on and the cause of the accident was under intense investigation.
