Science and tech take centre stage for month in Beijing
          ( 2003-10-10 01:53) (China Daily)

The sixth Beijing Academic Exchange Month for Science and Technology was launched yesterday in the capital.

This year's academic exchange month will lean its focus towards the actual effects of science and innovation, said Tian Xiaoping, deputy chairman of the sponsoring Beijing Association for Science and Technology, at the opening ceremony.

A serial of activities will be held to draw attention to the latest achievements in the search for an effective way to fight SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome).

Other academic exchanges will cover issues such as environmental protection, the modern manufacturing industry, cultural relics preservation, traffic management, surplus rural labourers, research and development strategies in the biological and medical industry in the capital.

"Academic exchange month activities are open to the public,'' said Tian. "We encourage the public to learn more about science and technology by attending our lectures and forums, exploring academic papers in their areas of interest and reading academic publications.''

Tian also encourages people in the science and technology sector to fulfill their social duty and spread knowledge among the masses by giving public lectures, talking on television and putting information on the Internet.

Sources with the association said a total of 335 academic activities will be held during the month, sponsored by 89 municipal societies and 20-odd national societies.

At least 100 experts from abroad will also take part in the activities, discussing issues such as food safety, digital television, anti-dumping strategies and traffic management.
