Chinese, US firms cooperate to make super-thin copper foil
          ( 2003-10-08 20:59) (Xinhua)

China's leading copper company Jiangxi Copper Group has begun construction of a factory to produce "super-thin" copper foil with a thickness no more than 18 microns.

The factory, located in the New, High-Tech Development Zone of Nanchang, capital city of east China's Jiangxi province, is a joint venture between the Chinese company and US-based Yates, the world's leading copper product company.

Super-thin copper foil is widely used in the manufacturing of mobile phones and computers and has a huge market demand in China as its information technology sector continues to boom.

China has an annual capacity of merely 30,000 tons of copper foil, but there is no mass commercial production of copper foil of 18 microns or below.

The new factory, with a total investment of 580 million yuan (about US$70 million), is expected to be completed and go into operation in approximately 18 months. It will mainly produce copper foil with a thickness of 12, 18 and 35 microns, using the latest technologies developed by the US company.

The factory's annual capacity is expected to reach 6,000 tons and its products will cope with the domestic demand and be exported, according to a source with the Chinese company.

Yates was among the world's first copper foil firms to produce circuit boards.
