Leading schools in Beijing say 'no' to students' mobile phones
          ( 2003-09-30 11:02) (People's Daily)

Three reasons make some leading schools in Beijing discourage middle school students to bring mobile phones to campus.

First, the safety can't be assured. Shi Yanlun, President of the Capital Normal University held that it is dangerous for children to bring valuable mobile phone along to school for it is unavoidable to be lost during physical exercises and other activities and may incur unnecessary trouble to teachers. Some lawless people particularly rob middle school students of their mobile phones and some even got injured. Moreover, conflicts also arise among children because of delivering improper calls and short messages.

Second, mobile phones hinder students' studies. Many teachers complain that some students have phone calls in class, disturbing themselves and others. Some students busy themselves with short messages, regardless of their studies. Indulgence in mobile phones has brought many students setback in their studies. Facing these phenomena, the Middle School affiliated with Renmin University of China clearly pointed out in a message to parents that students are forbidden to bring mobile phones into the campus.

Third, mobile phones serve as a hotbed for students' vanity. A new grade one senior high school student in a leading school asked to buy a 4000-yuan colored-screen mobile phone, which turned out to be the fifth one ever since he entered the middle school. There are always many students asking to buy a new phone as soon as a new type emerges in market. To buy or not to buy, that is a question. The former will increase the economic burden of the family while the latter will make children "belittled" in front of fellow students. Parents are between the fire and the water on the one hand whereas on the other it helps instigate their children's mentality of vanity.

Most presidents and teachers at leading schools of Beijing hold that IC telephones on campus have made it very easy for students to get in touch with others, so middle school students should not bring mobile phones to school at present. These schools also call for cooperation from parents, holding that it's never too late to use mobile phones when they are popularized in society.
