China to add one more large oilfield
          ( 2003-09-23 14:50) (Xinhua)

A large oilfield capable of producing one million tons of oil annually will be built at Hailar Basin in north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, late in the 10th five-year-plan period (2001-2005).

The news was announced Monday by Wang Fuchun, an official with the Development and Reform Commission of Bulun Buir city, Inner Mongolia.

Chinese oil workers first discovered oil and gas resources in Hailar Basin in 1980s, but didn't make much progress in oil and gas reserve prospecting because of the complicated geological features of the basin, said Wang.

In the past years, workers with the Hulun Buir Branch of Daqing Petroleum Co. Ltd based in China's northernmost Heilongjiang Province have verified 650 million tons of oil reserves and 270 billion cubic meters of natural gas thanks to the application of new technologies for oil prospecting.

The workers have also carried out oil exploration tests at three major drilling zones in Xin Barag Left Banner and Xin Barag Right Banner, both inside Hulun Buir City. They turned out 120,000 tons of crude oil last year and the yield is expected to reach 200, 000 tons this year.

Oil output from Hailar Basin will amount to 500,000 tons next year with the completion and operation of the oil boosting station on Jalai Nor Railway, and will rise to one million tons in 2005, said the official.
