Arsenal, Man United play to 0-0 tie
          ( 2003-09-22 10:29) (Agencies)

Ruud van Nistelrooy of Manchester United missed a penalty kick during second-half injury time Sunday and Arsenal regained first place in the Premier League with a 0-0 tie on the road.

Van Nistelrooy hit the crossbar, his third straight miss on a penalty kick. The penalty was awarded after Diego Forlan fell when challenged by Martin Keown.

Keown taunted van Nistelrooy following the shot, and players from both teams scuffled in midfield when the game ended. Van Nistelrooy appeared to be pushed as he walked away, and other players had to be separated.

Patrick Vieira was ejected after aiming a kick at van Nistelrooy with nine minutes to go.

Star defender Sol Campbell did not play for Arsenal because of the death of his father.

"It was important for us not to lose," Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said. "And it was important to show we are resilient and that we can defend."

Arsenal, which lost 3-0 at home to Internazionale in the Champions League last Wednesday, has 14 points. Chelsea had taken first place by winning 5-0 at last-place Wolves on Saturday. United, with U.S. goalkeeper Tim Howard, is tied with Chelsea with 13 points. Southampton has 12.

In Sunday's other game, Middlesbrough beat Everton 1-0 for its first win of the season.

Glenn Hoddle was dismissed Sunday as manager of Tottenham. His club is 1-4-1, off to its worst start to a Premier League season.
