Alonso starts last, collides but still scores
          ( 2003-09-15 10:40) (Agencies)

Spain's Fernando Alonso was an unlikely point scorer on Sunday after starting last in the Italian Grand Prix and colliding with another car in the first few metres.

The 22-year-old Renault driver, who won the Hungarian Grand Prix last month to become the youngest winner in the history of the sport, lined up on the back of the grid after his car's traction control failed in qualifying.

"Unfortunately I lost the front wing at the start," he said. "I hit Jos (Verstappen's Minardi) as he was trying to avoid the Jaguar."

Jaguar's Justin Wilson made a slow start with a gearbox problem and Verstappen swerved to avoid him and hit Alonso.

The impact lifted Alonso's car into the air and he pitted on the next lap for a new front wing and nose. That left him a lap down on leader Michael Schumacher, whose Ferrari he had lapped in Hungary.

"All I could do was push to the limit for the rest of the race," said Alonso.
