          Copperfield's class act
          ( 2003-09-04 09:19) (Beijing Weekend)

Sixteen years after walking though the Great Wall of China, magician supreme David Copperfield will return to Beijing for what he promises will be another breathtaking performance.

His new show, "Portal," integrates history, story telling, romance and hi-tech with Copperfield as ever trying to amaze audiences beyond their wildest dreams.

The conjurer promises nothing less that an adventure for the senses and the mind!
Born in New Jersey in 1956, he began performing magic at the age of 12 in his hometown. Soon after, he became the youngest magician to be admitted to the society of American Magicians.

By age 16, he was teaching a course in magic at New York University.
He has received the Emmy Award for dozens of times and two "Entertainer of the Year" awards.

He's the only magician to be honoured with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Copperfield has also been knighted by the French Government receiving the "Chevalier of Arts and Letter."

Creating a new performance approximately every two-and-a-half years, Copperfield finds time to give over 550 shows per year to sell-out audiences around the world.
"After five years' negotiation, we have finally got the chance to invite David Copperfield to Beijing," said Wang Cheng, manager of performance department of the Poly Culture & Art Co Ltd, the sponsor of the Beijing show.

He added that though it's impossible for Copperfield to perform his classic grand open-air illusions this time, the giant conjurer has prepared a new show for Chinese audiences.

Many Chinese magicians are excited about Copperfield's coming because they agree that he is at the pinnacle of his profession.

Before coming to the Chinese capital, he will first visit Shenzhen, Guangzhou and Shanghai.

"Copperfield has revolutionized magic to raise it to the level of art from merely a kind of performance," commented Wang Zhiwei, member of the International Brotherhood of Magicians. "Just like many people can play piano but few become masters. For Copperfield, magic is not only about skills, technique and props, it's also about artistic inspiration."
