Police find explosives at station in Indian capital
          ( 2003-08-31 09:04) (Agencies)

Indian police found a huge quantity of explosives at New Delhi's main railway station on Saturday, less than a week after 52 people were killed in bomb blasts in the financial center of Bombay.

A police spokesman told Reuters the explosives were found in a bag on a platform during a routine check.

"It was an unclaimed bag and contained about 150 gelatin sticks weighing about 21 kg (46 pounds)," the spokesman said.

Bomb disposal squads were called in to deal with the explosives and police are investigating where they came from although the spokesman said no arrests had been made.

The New Delhi railway station is one of India's busiest and handles thousands of passengers every day.

The capital has been on high alert after two car bombs killed 52 people in Bombay Monday. Police have blamed an outlawed Muslim students group for those blasts and said it was acting with a banned, Pakistan-based Kashmiri rebel group.

The Bombay blasts, along with unabated violence in disputed Kashmir, have cast a shadow on a thaw in ties between India and Pakistan who were on the brink of war over Kashmir last year.

Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee Friday ruled out talks with Islamabad until there was an end to militant attacks which New Delhi blames on Pakistan-based Kashmiri separatists.

India accuse Pakistan of arming Kashmiri militant groups, Pakistan denies the charges.
