Increasing temperatures turns up the heat on electricity network
          ( 2003-07-30 16:34) (newsphoto.com.cn)

Lights in a Shanghai office building have been turned off due to an electricity shortage following temperatures above 35 C (95 F) for 18 consecutive days, July 29, 2003. The Shanghai municipal government announced Tuesday that all landscape lighting around the city will be temporarily suspended and restrictions will be imposed on electricity supplies to factories and non-essential engineering projects. The piece of road, 11 metres wide and 5 metres long, raised about 0.6 metres above the road. The city, known as one of China's four "heating stoves'' in summer, has endured continued high temperatures over 40 degrees centigrade since July 24. The buckled road was repaired Tuesday and the traffic has returned normal. [newsphoto.com.cn]
