Celebrating 'Eat Lovesickness' in Guizhou

Chixiangsi, or Eat Lovesickness, is a traditional social activity among the Dong ethnic group in Southwest China’s Guizhou province. It usually takes place during the first month of the lunar year, or that in late fall.

On this day, residents from adjacent villages where the Dong people live gather and propose a toast to each other. A series of activities like singing traditional songs and sending each other gifts would also be held on this day.

This day is also important for young people, as boys would often court girls on this day, when the girls dress up and perform in a group.
