"Cinema has 100 years of history and I am impressed by those directors who have realized that this form of art is based and will always be based on continuous research," she went on saying.

"Perhaps there could be some mistakes in first films, but what is important to me is to feel a sense of creation, which comes from the uniqueness of each individual and can always bring out new things," she said.

For this reason, art is "irreplaceable" also in so-called commercial films, that Qu does not see in contrast with art house ones. "There are high-quality art house films and bad-quality art house films, and there are high-quality commercial films and bad-quality commercial films," she said.

"I think cinema has been a combination of art and commerce since its birth, so it is only a matter of more art-oriented or commercial-oriented degree," she added. "I do not see these two necessarily opposing each other, they can be well-combined into a good film," she explained to Xinhua.

In fact there will definitely be an audience for every good film, so that young directors must feel free to "make different films for different audiences, they do not need to make one film for everybody to like," Qu stressed.

"Film festivals like the Venice one came into existence to promote the cinema as an art, so here is where you recognize new trends of cinema. You sometimes see an idea in an art house film and then, five years later, you see the same idea applied into a commercial film," she said. "This is the core of the creation that actually fits into the entire industry, we are here to discover new cinema," the Chinese director underlined.
