Disasters at sea: Deadliest shipwrecks in China

March 11,2012? A passenger ferry crashed into a cargo ship on Xun River in Shiju county, Guiping city, Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region. Twenty passengers were never found. There were about 38 people on the ferry which may not be an accurate number since the ship owners did not disclose the whole truth.

Nov 28,2012? A fishing boat carrying 17 passengers overturned in rough sea as it approached a nearby ship. The drowning fishermen called for help by using satellite phone. Eleven died and five were never found.

March 18,2013? A freighter with 14 sailors on board from Tianjin overturned by gale. Eleven bodies were discovered, two were never found and one died soon after being rescued.

May 29,2013? A fishing boat with 10 villagers and the boat owner in Haikou, Hainan province, overturned on its way to the other side of the river. The owner saved four people but four died and two were never found.

Sept 29,2013? Five fishing boats from Taishan, Guangdong province and Hong Kong with 171 fishermen were caught in a strong typhoon off Shanhu Island in the Xisha archipelago in the South China Sea. Three fishing boats sank and at least 74 people went missing.

Aug 1,2014? A ferry came from a wharf to another in Zhongshan city, Guangdong province, but then encountered sudden strong thunderstorms and winds. It overturned and all people on board fell into water. Ten were rescued and six died.

Jan 15,2015 ?A newly built ship with 25 passengers turned upside down and sank at its first trial trip in Zhangjiagang city, Jiangsu province. Twenty two people died, including eight foreigners.

Feb 21,2015? A boat a villager used to transport his relatives for a short trip to the other side of the river toppled and sank on the way back. Nine people were saved, eight died and one went missing.
