Transparency key in building modern govt

Transparency and publishing relevant information play a crucial role in building a modern government.

According to the 2014 Blue Book of Rule of Law released by Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in February, Guizhou province ranked 8th in the government transparency in 2013, up 13 spots from 2012.

"The main reason for Guizhou's jump in the ranking is because it has done a much better job of publishing government information," an expert from Chinese Academy of Social Science said.

Other than government work reports, official documents and bulletins and government procurement, the Guizhou government also discloses information on low-cost housing, land demolition, food security and healthcare.

Also, 51 provincial departments in Guizhou published financial budgets and public expenditures last year.

Guizhou ranks ahead of Beijing, Chongqing and Shanghai, which shows that government transparency has nothing to do with economic strength.
