          Updated: 2013-01-30 09:21

          Overview

Beijing Normal University is a renowned institution of higher learning that emphasizes teacher training and basic learning in the arts and sciences, under the Ministry of Education’s stewardship. It was originally the Normal College of Imperial University of Peking, founded in 1902. In 1908, its name was changed to the Advanced Normal College of Imperial University and it became an independent entity. In 1912, the name was again changed to Beijing Advanced Normal School, then, in 1923, it acquired its current name and was the first normal university ever in China. In 1931, it absorbed Peking Women’s Normal University and, in 1952, Fu Jen Catholic University.

For more than a century, Beijing Normal shared the fate of the Chinese and their struggle to gain independence, freedom, and democracy, and to prosper and it has played a significant role in patriotic movements such as the May 4th Movement (1919) and the December 9th Movement (1935). Over the years, it has been home to a large number of intellectuals and scholars, who have promoted culture and stimulated the zeal for education. Among these are Li Dazhao, Lu Xun, Liang Qichao, Qian Xuantong, Wu Chengren, Li Jinxi, Chen Yuan, Fan Wenlan, Hou Wailu, Bai Shouyi, Zhong Jingwen, Qi Gong, Hu Xiansu, Wang Kunren, and Zhou Tingru. Over a hundred-year period, Beijing Normal University has developed a philosophy of pursuing studies, cultivating oneself, and helping the world, and in doing so has stuck to a fine tradition of patriotism, progress, honesty, sincerity, truth-seeking, innovation, virtue, and learning. Its guiding spirit is "Learn to be an excellent teacher and be an exemplary person".

During a period of building China’s key universities, under the 7th and 8th Five-year plans (1986-1990, 1991-1995) , Beijing Normal University became one of the country’s first 10 key universities. It joined the first "211" development project under the 9th Five-year Plan. In 2002, for the school’s centennial celebration, the Education Ministry and Beijing municipal government pointed to the collaboration with Beijing Normal. And Beijing listed Beijing Normal as one of the institutions it wanted to develop into a world-class university. Under the 10th Five-year Plan, the school was added to the country’s "985" construction project.

Beijing Normal covers a 172.6-acre tract of land, and has more than 3,000 faculty members and 21,000 full-time students, with 8,700 undergrads, 10,000 graduate students, and 1,800 international students. It has also helped established Confucius Institutes at the University of Manchester, in the UK, the University of Oklahoma and San Francisco State University, in the US, and Dawson University and Sherbrooke University, in Canada. The school’s long-term international students come from several dozen countries and regions, with 65 percent pursuing academic degrees.

Since the beginning of China’s 11th Five-year Plan (2006-2010), the school’s goal has been to create a distinctive, first-class, globally known, research-oriented university. Its development philosophy has been to stick to its current scale, make optimal use of its structure, highlight its prominent characteristics, and carry out independent innovation. And it has a development strategy for teacher education, various subjects, talent, research, a stronger university, internationalization, insured development, and innovations.
