Boy hangs himself because he can't buy book he wants

A 9-year-old boy hanged himself because his grandparents did not give him money for a book he wanted.

The third-grade pupil in Jianli county of Hubei province, was found hanging from the branch of a fruit tree in the courtyard of his home on May 26. According to his grandfather, the boy had asked for 36 yuan ($5.54) for a book the day earlier and his grandmother had promised to give him the money.

However, finding only 2 yuan left on the table the next morning, he hanged himself when nobody was at home.

"He was a little cranky and didn't want to talk to me that morning," the boy's grandfather said. "I left him alone in the room and went out for about 10 minutes. When I came back, I saw him on the tree."

The boy's parents are divorced and he was living with his grandparents.
