China Red Cross aids cyclone-hit Bangladesh

DHAKA -- The Red Cross Society of China has donated 205,000 taka (US$30,000) as emergent aid to Bangladesh Red Crescent Society for the disaster relief work in cyclone-hit southern Bangladesh.

The Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Zhang Xianyi transferred the donation to M.S. Akbar, Chairman of Bangladesh Red Crescent Society here on Thursday.

After receiving the donation, Akbar said China is the first country which provided aid to Bangladesh Red Crescent Society. He expressed his heartfelt thanks to China, saying that this reflects the true friendship between the Chinese people and the people of Bangladesh.

Zhang Xianyi spoke highly of the role Bangladesh Red Crescent Society has played in the post-cyclone rescue and relief operation.

He said China is willing to strengthen cooperation between the two countries in terms of post-disaster rescue and relief work.

Meanwhile, in a message of consolation to Bangladesh's Foreign Minister Dipu Moni, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi has expressed the deep condolence for the cyclone victims and sincere sympathy to bereaved families and affected people.

He also hopes and believes that the Bangladeshi government and people of Bangladesh will surely conquer the disaster and rebuild their homelands.

The cyclone Aila formed in the Bay of Bengal battered Bangladesh's southwestern coast on Monday, leaving at least 131 people dead and nearly 3.5 million affected, according to official count.
