Tibetan history display opens in Macao

HONG KONG -- Colorful artifacts from Tibet's rich and diverse history were unveiled in a special exhibition in Macao on Friday.

The display, "Customs and Practices on a Snow-capped Plateau," which boasts 99 exhibits, was officially opened at the Forum de Macau on Friday.

"It's a great opportunity to show the many splendors of Tibetan history and cultural heritage to the world, and to celebrate the 50th anniversary of democratic reformation of Tibet," said Raidi, former vice-chairman of the standing committee of the National People's Congress and honorary chairperson for the China Tibet Culture Protection and Development Association.

"It also shows the tremendous support the rest of the country has given to Tibet's development. The new Tibet is prosperous and vibrant," he added.

Subjects from politics and the arts to astrology and medicine are covered, with pieces including golden Buddha statues, ancient texts, Tibetan war masks and records of traditional music and dance.

The display is also intended to highlight the efforts currently being made to preserve culture in the autonomous region.

Vice-minister of Culture Zhao Shaohua said: "Tibetan heritage can only grow stronger in the cradle of the motherland. It will continue to thrive and glow."

The exhibition also highlights the close ties between Macao and the mainland and is a part of the celebrations to mark the 10th anniversary of its return to China. Zhao Guo, who lives in Macao, was thrilled to see the treasures. "It's definitely a joy to share the glory and hopes of Tibet. I hope there'll be more cultural exchanges like this in the future," he said.
