Bilateral relations between China and Mauritius

1. Review of bilateral political relations

Since the establishment of the diplomatic relations of China and Mauritius on April 15, 1972, the relationship between the two countries has seen a favorable and steady development.

Chinese leaders and officials who visited Mauritius mainly include: Ji Pengfei, Vice-premier of the State Council (September 1980), Song Ping, Member of the State Council (June 1985), Chen Muhua, Vice-chairwoman of the NPC (June 1990), Qian Qichen, Vice-premier and foreign minister (January 1994), Zhu Rongji, Vice-premier (July 1995 by way of transit), Jiang Chunyun, Vice-premier (March 1997), Li Peng, Chairman of the NPC Standing Committee (November 1999), Li Ruihuan, Chairman of the NPPCC (April 2001), and Tang Jiaxuan, Foreign Minister (January 2003), etc.

Leaders and officials who visited China from Mauritius include: Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, Prime minister (April 1972), Gaetan Duval, Foreign minister (May 1973), Aneerood Jugnauth, Prime minister (May 1983, July 1991 and July 2002), Paul Berenger, Foreign minister (April 1993), Lassam Uteem, President of Mauritius (June 1994), Prem Nababsing, Deputy Prime minister and concurrently minister of economic planning and development (May 1995), Navinchandra Ramgoolam, Prime minister (April 1997), Rajkeswur Purryag, Deputy prime minister and concurrently minister of foreign affairs (August 1999),and Anil Gayan, Foreign Minister (attending the 2000 Sino-African Cooperation Forum and in 2001, heading the Southeastern African Common Market Delegation), etc.

In 1995, The Republic of Mauritius set up its embassy and sent its resident ambassador here in China.

2. Bilateral economy and trade relations and economic and technological cooperation

Since the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Mauritius, the economy and trade relations and the economic and technological cooperation of the two countries have gained a favorable development. The two sides signed the agreement for economic and technological cooperation. After the establishment of the diplomatic relations, China began to provide Mauritius with all kinds of aid and assistance. So far, China has already aided Mauritius to build a stadium, bridges and airport terminal building, activity center for the aged and living quarters of low prices and other projects. The mutually beneficial cooperation between China and Mauritius began in 1982. At present, the Chinese companies working in Mauritius mainly cover: China Building Engineering Corporation and Yunnan International Company for Economic and Technological Cooperation, etc. Up to the end of 2002, the total value of the workforce undertaking contracts signed between the two sides reached US$ 424.52 million with the total value for project undertaking to make up US$ 149.49 million. The year of 2002 saw the total trade value of China and Mauritius reach US$ 89.99 million, of which the Chinese export accounted for US$ 85.32 million while the import was US$ 4.67 million.

3. Exchanges and cooperation in the fields of culture, education and medical work

In 1980, the two countries signed the agreement for cultural cooperation. Up to now, the two sides have witnessed the mutual visits of over 30 cultural and artistic performance troupes. In July 1988, the Chinese Cultural Center was inaugurated in Mauritius.

Starting from 1981 onwards, China began to provide Mauritius with the quota of scholarships and up to the year of 2002, there are a total of 56 Mauritius students studying in China.
