China needs to increase its voice in cyberspace: Experts

Chinese internet and technology experts called the government on Thursday to participate more in formulating international rules and increase more contributions to establishing common community in cyberspace.

Shen Changxiang, academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, said during the third annual World Internet Conference that every country should respect each other and their own interest while governing cyberspace.

As a large country with more than 700 million netizens, "it's urgent for China to boost its ability in participating in cyberspace governance and increase more cooperation with foreign nations," Shen said.

In his eyes, the more participation in cyberspace, the louder China's voice will be regarding governance of the global internet industry.

"Meanwhile, it's also a necessity to speed up the education of internet and technological talents, as well as to increase efforts to innovate and solve problems of our own core technologies," he added.

The three-day conference in Wuzhen, an ancient water town in Zhejiang province, will end on Friday.

Ni Guangnan, another academician from the academy, echoed Shen. He said that cybersecurity, as a global hot issue in the internet industry, must be based on respect for cyberspace sovereignty.

"Although China has achieved a lot in the internet industry, it has still lots of work to do," he said.

"We are improving our own technologies, aiming to use our own products and software to protect our internet infrastructure, ensure cybersecurity and maintain our cyberspace sovereignty," he noted.

"If we can do more or have breakthroughs in developing our core technologies, our internet industry will be stronger and our infrastructure also will be much safer and controlled," he added.
