Guests put thumbs to work spreading Summit news

By Zhang Yunbi (China Daily) Updated: 2016-09-07 09:07

Pictures of handshakes with President Xi Jinping and group photos were featured in the online postings of leaders attending the 11th G20 Leaders Summit on Sunday and Monday.

The postings, issued via Facebook and Twitter, as well as China's leading micro blog Sina Weibo, have also recorded many light moments, such as leaders' interaction with the Chinese public, their tours and the scenic surroundings throughout the events.

As a slew of bilateral meetings between Xi and the visiting leaders were held on the sidelines of the summit in Hangzhou, photos of the talks quickly found their way onto social networking platforms, like the official Twitter accounts of Russian President Vladimir Putin and Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

Lee also posted a picture of the evening gala presented to welcome leaders at Hangzhou's well-known West Lake on Sunday, and he praised the "fantastic show" by Zhang Yimou, director of the gala and a leading Chinese filmmaker.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted a group photo of G20 member leaders taken at the start of the summit on his Facebook account and said, "This is an important forum to discuss global challenges & how to overcome them."

In the realm of Chinese micro blogs, some leaders tweeted often in Mandarin to reach out to the Chinese public.

Justin Trudeau may be one of the leaders who posted the most via micro blog. He arrived early, on Aug 30, to start his first trip to China as Canadian prime minister, and as of Tuesday he had already posted 21 times about the China trip.

His messages offered great variety, ranging from his daughter to his starting a basketball game in Shanghai. His trip to the Great Wall in Beijing got the most thumb-ups-more than 1,100.

Brazilian President Michel Temer did not miss the chance either. As of Tuesday, he had 14 postings on his micro blog covering most of the key moments in his first trip to China as Brazil's top leader.
