China's aquatic products output to rise 4.6%

BEIJING - China's aquatic products output will rise 4.6 percent year-on-year to 53.5 million tons this year, a Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) official said Thursday.

Despite an unfavorable global economic environment and China being hit by several natural disasters this year, the country's fishery sector grew at a steady pace, MOA Fisheries Bureau director Zhao Xingwu said at a national fishery work conference.

The wholesale price of aquatic products rose 8.5 percent year-on-year to 16.41 yuan per kilogram in the first 11 months of the year, Zhao said.

Customs data shows aquatic product exports rose 25.5 percent year-on-year to $10.66 billion in the first 10 months, equivalent to 2.59 million tons of aquatic products.

Imports and exports totaled $15.99 billion, equivalent to 5.5 million tons of aquatic products, in the same 10-month period.

Zhao said China's seafood trade has recovered from the 2008 financial crisis.

He predicted that the 2010 exports will rise 16.8 percent year-on-year to hit $12.5 billion, a record high.
