US-China IP protection forum opens in Chicago

US-China IP Protection Cooperation and Research Forum, hosted by John Marshall Law School, opened in Chicago Thursday, calling for greater promotion of cooperation in IP education and related law enforcement between the two countries.

The theme of the Forum is to celebrate the extraordinary 15- year successful cooperation between the John Marshall Law School and the Chinese State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO), as well as the creation of a significant and exciting Chinese IP Resource Center at the John Marshall Law School.

John Corkery, Dean at the John Marshall Law School and the Chinese Consulate General in Chicago Ping Huang both delivered a welcome remarks at the opening ceremony. Gan Shaoning, SIPO Deputy Commissioner, also spoke at the forum .

Dorothy Lee, professor at John Marshall Law School and one of the founders of US-China IP training program, told Xinhua that the major purpose of this Forum is to promote the understanding of Chinese IP system in the United States and further bilateral cooperation in IP area.

Nearly 100 professional from American and Chinese governments, legal and business communities attended the one-day long Forum.

Morgan Chu, the distinguished American-Chinese IP lawyer and Partner at Irell & Manella LLP in Los Angeles, and Lulin Gao, former SIPO Deputy Commissioner and Chair of East IP Intellectual Property Service in Beijing, China, also presented at the Forum.

The John Marshall Law School is one of the most distinguished IP Law research institutions in the United States. It started its official cooperation with SIPO in 1994. They started the Master Degree program in 2001. Up to date, more than 400 Chinese IP specialists have taken courses at the John Marshall Law School in Chicago, among which the majority has become the backbone of Chinese IP protection.
