Heads of State-run firms urged to be clean handed

A senior anti-corruption official of the Communist Party of China (CPC) has urged heads of the country's State-run companies to be clean handed.

He Yong, deputy secretary of CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI), made the remarks at a meeting held Monday to promote the Party's mechanism for prevention and punishment of corruption.

Restrictions of and supervision over the power should be intensified for principal leaders of companies, he said.

Li Yuanchao, head of the Organization Department of the CPC Central Committee, said Party organizations in State-run companies should participate in the process of major decisions made by the company's board meeting to ensure that the Party organizations could play supervising functions.

During Li's visits to Sinopec, China Unicom and Beijing Public Transport Ltd, he said the establishment and obligations of Party organizations should be included in the State-run company's management system.

The anti-corruption effort in the State-run companies came after the former chairman of the Sinopec Chen Tonghai was sentenced to death last month with a two-year reprieve for taking huge bribes.

Chen took about 195.73 million yuan ($28.66 million) in bribes from 1999 to June 2007 by taking advantage of his positions in Sinopec, one of the country's major oil refiners.
