New berth opens at Yantian terminals

The new berth built to accommodate up to 12,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) containerships opened at the Yantian International Container Terminals (YICT) on September 1 in Shenzhen, a coastal city in South China's Guangdong Province.

Advanced gantry cranes with steel construction spanning up to 40 feet were available at the berths. At 668.8 meters in length and a water depth alongside of 16 meters, the new berth can accommodate the world's largest container vessels and is supported by 125,000 square meters of container yard for stacking 12,000 TEUs.

The terminal has deployed the latest dual-hoist tandem-lift cranes with an outreach of 65 meters. The cranes can straddle 23 rows of containers, enabling them to perform on average operational rates that are 20 to 30 per cent greater than other traditional forms of quay cranes.
