China urges global vigilance against revival of Japanese militarism

A Chinese defense spokesperson has urged all peace-loving countries and people to guard against any revival of Japanese militarism.

Zhang Xiaogang, spokesman for China's Ministry of National Defense, made the remarks at an online news briefing, criticizing Japan's recent moves in the military and security field.

These include comments by Japanese government officials who said Tokyo's consideration of possessing nuclear weapons would not be irresponsible and that Japan would not rule out any options when it comes to procuring nuclear-powered submarines.

In addition, Japan's Foreign Ministry has substantially increased the budget for its Official Security Assistance program, under which Tokyo plans to provide defense equipment and supplies, including advanced radar systems, to Southeast Asian countries.

Zhang said criticism from the international community, including Southeast Asian countries, has been growing over Japan's latest security-related moves.

"Instead of reflecting and exercising restraint, Japan has been making excuses and stepping up its military expansion," he said.

He criticized Japan for openly exporting lethal weapons and even advocating nuclear armament "in defiance of international justice," saying such remarks and actions further expose the "ulterior motives" of Japan's right-wing forces in pushing "remilitarization" and attempting to bring militarism back to life.

All peace-loving countries and people should see through Japan's improper intentions and prevent any revival of Japanese militarism, Zhang said, calling on the international community to jointly uphold the postwar international order and firmly safeguard peace and stability in the world and the region.
