Gambian youth urged to seize historic zero-tariff access to China

Young Gambian entrepreneurs have been urged to seize the historic 100 percent zero-tariff access for Gambian exports to China that opens unparalleled opportunities for youth-led trade and deepening bilateral economic cooperation.

President of the Gambia Youth Chamber of Commerce Modou Lamin Gassama called on the youth from the West African country to innovate, scale production, boost trade, create jobs and support rural livelihoods.

Gassama, who spoke over the weekend during the 9th China–Gambia Friendship Bantaba and the inaugural "Youth In Business Award" ceremony, jointly hosted by the Chinese embassy in Gambia and the chamber of commerce, lauded the Chinese government's support for Gambian youth.

"This new initiative helps to bridge the gap between the Gambian market and youth development, inspiring young entrepreneurs to seize opportunities and contribute to the strengthening of China-Gambia cooperation," he said.

Funded by the Chinese embassy, the program awarded 10 outstanding young entrepreneurs among the chamber of commerce members across five key sectors, including agriculture, industry, services, heritage, and China-Gambia trade.

Economic and Commercial Counsellor Tong Zhan from the Chinese embassy emphasized that youth are the future of both nations and of bilateral friendship.

He pointed out that the 100 percent zero-tariff policy for Gambian exports to China has been implemented and protocols for exporting peanuts and cashews to China have been successfully signed and created more opportunities for Gambian youth entrepreneurs.

Under the agreement signed on June 18, Gambian groundnut and cashew exports are now benefitting from duty-free access to the Chinese market through the China Duty Free Quota Free Market Access Preferential Scheme, facilitating enhanced trade opportunities for Gambian producers.

"I encourage the young generation to continue striving for greater business achievements," Tong said.
