Renewable energy capacity continue to surge

China's renewable energy capacity continued its rapid expansion in the first three quarters of 2025, with new installations reaching 310 gigawatts (GW) and driving significant optimization of the country's energy structure, the National Energy Administration (NEA) said on Friday.

New renewable energy capacity added from January to September surged 47.7 percent year-on-year, accounting for approximately 84.4 percent of all new power installations nationwide, the energy regulator said.

Of the new capacity, wind power added 61.09 GW, while solar power contributed 240 GW, it said.

Renewable energy generation also maintained robust growth, reaching 2.89 trillion kilowatt-hours (TWh) in the first three quarters, up 15.5 percent year-on-year. This output accounted for about 40 percent of China's total electricity generation and approximately 60 percent of industrial power consumption during the period.

The NEA highlighted that the increase in wind and solar power generation alone, which stood at 382.2 billion kWh, exceeded the total increase in national electricity consumption of 358.1 billion kWh during the first nine months of the year.
