Dongying charts new path in tourism, culture

Dongying, a coastal city in East China's Shandong province, has transformed its natural wonders into captivating visitor experiences this summer.

Situated where the Yellow River meets the Bohai Sea, Dongying is home to some of China's most dynamic and ecologically rich wetlands. The city has established eco-tourism as its signature appeal, with highlights including the striking yellow-and-blue waters at the river-sea boundary, newly formed wetlands ecosystems, and sanctuaries for migratory birds. These natural assets form the heart of immersive activities such as marathon events, birdwatching excursions, and open-air summer festivals, injecting renewed vitality into the local tourism landscape.

To facilitate tourism growth, Dongying has made significant strides in improving transportation infrastructure. The newly launched Taishan Mountain–Yellow River tourism train connects Dongying with Shandong's premier destinations, enabling travelers to experience majestic mountains, flowing rivers, and coastal scenery in a single journey.

Heritage train routes, marketed to students and young adventurers, invite visitors to explore wetlands, rural villages, and cultural sites at a leisurely pace, helping Dongying's position as a four-season tourism destination.

The city is also developing culture-led tourism initiatives. The Hehai Music Concert has rapidly become a flagship event, drawing nearly 40,000 attendees with over 30 percent from outside the city.

Supported by municipal investment exceeding 11 million yuan ($1.53 million), the festival has stimulated local consumption through integrated tickets packages offering discounts on accommodation, dining, retail, and attractions–extending its economic impact beyond the main event.

Dongying's scenic landscapes are increasingly serving as backdrops for film and short video productions, further boosting its cultural profile and attracting new visitor demographics. With the opening of family-friendly destinations like Gaga Imagination Island and upgraded wetland and lakeside resorts, Dongying now offers diverse experience blending nature, recreation, and creativity for travelers of all ages.

Bolstered by robust ecological resources, expanding transportation networks, and innovative tourism strategies, Dongying is establishing itself as a compelling destination for international travelers.
