Chinese firms unveil accelerated and ambitious plans for all-solid-state batteries

Several Chinese key players in the all-solid-state sector, including BYD, unveiled an ambitious timeline for producing the game-changing battery by 2027, which signals China's determination to lead in next-generation battery technology globally.

Sun Huajun, chief technology officer of BYD Lithium Battery Co Ltd, the battery firm for China's largest EV maker BYD, said the company plans to begin small-scale production of sulfide-based all-solid-state batteries by 2027.

"These batteries are expected to be incorporated into mainstream EV models by 2030," said Sun at the second China All-Solid-State Battery Innovation and Development Summit Forum that ended on Sunday.

The forum was held by the China All-Solid-State Battery Collaborative Innovation Platform, a consortium set up last year that united almost the country's all battery makers and automakers to commercialize all-solid-state batteries, as part of a government-led drive.

In a further sign of Chinese players' progress in the sector, Ouyang Minggao, a Tsinghua University professor and one of the initiators of the platform, said that his team is expected to launch solid-state battery products by 2027, with full-scale production slated for 2030.

This push is expected to generate an impressive output exceeding 100 billion yuan ($14 billion), Ouyang said.

In addition, Wang Deping, chief scientist of FAW Group, one of China's largest State-owned automakers, said that the company aims to achieve small-scale application of solid-state batteries by 2027.

He disclosed that China FAW has been dedicated to the development of all-solid-state batteries since 2014, aligning their research with the needs of the vehicle manufacturing sector.
