Group of 77, China hand over presidency of UN coalition to Iraq

China's ambassador to the United Nations on Monday reiterated the importance of multilateralism and global collaboration while attending the ceremony of the presidency handover of the Group of 77 and China coalition.

With ongoing conflicts, a slow economic recovery and rising unilateralism, multilateralism faces serious challenges, said Fu Cong, China's permanent representative to the UN. The Group of 77 and China must unite to address these issues and advance shared development, he said.

Iraq assumed the presidency of the Group of 77 and China on Monday, taking over from Uganda. The bloc, which includes 134 developing nations and China, is the largest coalition within the United Nations. China extended its congratulations to Iraq, expressing full support for its leadership.

"Members of the group should build trust, improve communication, and coordinate on key international and regional matters. By doing so, we can create a global environment that benefits developing countries. True multilateralism must be upheld, with the United Nations playing a central role in fostering a more balanced and inclusive global system," said Fu.

Fu noted that this year marks the 80th anniversary of the creation of the United Nations. And the group was founded to advance development, and it continues to thrive on that purpose.

"It's vital to prioritize development on the international agenda, strengthen partnerships, and accelerate progress on the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals," said Fu.

He emphasized that by embracing digital, green and smart technologies, "We can drive growth and ensure no country or individual is left behind."

Fu said the group should advocate for shared decision-making, oppose unilateralism, and push developed countries to meet their commitments on aid and climate financing, adding that reforms in global financial systems are needed to "amplify the voices of developing nations".

"We must enhance cooperation on artificial intelligence, build technical capacity in developing countries, and close the digital gap," he emphasized.

Fu said China "shares a close bond with the Global South and remains committed to supporting its development" and it will "continue to strengthen ties with Latin America, the Caribbean, and Pacific Island nations to drive sustainable growth".

Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein, and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also attended the handover ceremony.

Guterres extended congratulation to Iraq as it assumes the chairmanship for 2025, noting that Iraq was a founding member of the G77 60 years ago.

"We are living through a period of devastating conflicts, climate disasters, and deepening mistrust, but also one of opportunity to reshape the multilateral system for the better," said Guterres.
