Trump projected to have won North Dakota Republican caucuses

WASHINGTON - Former US President Donald Trump is projected to have defeated former US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley in the North Dakota Republican caucuses Monday, inching closer to becoming the Republican nominee for president.

NBC News and Fox News are among the media outlets which made the projection Monday night.

Trump, the frontrunner in the Republican presidential race, previously won Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada, South Carolina, Missouri, Michigan and Idaho. Haley, the only challenger to Trump in the Republican race, has only declared victory in Washington DC.

Over a dozen US states are set to kick off primary elections on Super Tuesday, March 5, the day in the presidential primary cycle when approximately one-third of all delegates to the Republican or Democratic conventions are to be distributed.

Tuesday's primaries could represent the last chance for Haley's ambitious attempt to challenge Trump for the Republican presidential nomination.

Candidates need to secure 1,215 delegates to clinch the Republican presidential nomination, and on Super Tuesday, 865 delegates are in play.
