UK's remarks on National Security Law a smear on China: Embassy

Regarding to relevant UK official's remarks on?National Security Law imposed on Hong Kong,?Embassy Spokesperson commented that those words?deliberately smeared China and interfered in China's internal affairs, and urged UK?to reflect on its own poor human rights record and correct the large number of human rights violations in the country.

The following is a readout of what the spokesperson said.

Question: On 30 June, Anne-Marie Trevelyan, Minister of State at the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, said on social media that three years ago the National Security Law was imposed on Hong Kong and rights and freedoms have been eroded. What's your comment?

Embassy Spokesperson: In disregard of basic facts, the remarks made by the relevant UK official deliberately smeared China and interfered in China's internal affairs. China firmly opposes it.

The implementation of the National Security Law has enabled Hong Kong to enter?a new period when it has restored order and is set to thrive. At present, the rule of law is better upheld, society is more stable and united, and the rights and freedoms enjoyed by Hong Kong residents in accordance with the law are better protected.

Hong Kong has long been returned to China. The UK side has no right to dictate Hong Kong-related affairs. What the UK should do is to reflect on its own poor human rights record and correct the large number of human rights violations in the country. We urge UK officials to abide by international law and basic norms governing international relations, and stop interfering in China's internal affairs.
