Procuratorate announces bundle of indictments

Sun Yuanliang, former vice-chairman of the Liaoning Provincial Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, was indicted for taking bribes by the People's Procuratorate of Chengde, Hebei province, according to a statement issued by the Supreme People's Procuratorate on Tuesday.

Sun made use of his positions to seek profits for others and accepted property while he was on duty. After retirement, he also took advantage of his former positions to seek improper benefits for others and accepted property from others through other on-duty officials.

The prosecutors have informed Sun of his rights and listened to defense's counsel.

Sun, 68, a native of Liaoning, joined the Party and began working in 1976. He served as mayor of Liaoyang, Liaoning from 2001 to 2004 and became Party chief of Liaoyang in August 2004. He served as vice-chairman of the CPPCC Liaoning Provincial Committee from January 2013 to January 2018.

He was placed under investigation in April 2022, expelled from the Party in September 2022, and arrested one month later.

In another case, Li Guohua, former general manager of the China United Network Communications Group, was indicted for taking bribes and abuse of power.

Li capitalized on his positions to help companies and individuals in project contracting, enterprise operation and career promotion, and then illegally accepted a large amount of property from others.

His abuses, the indictment read, resulted in heavy losses to the State.

Li, 63, a native of Jiangxi province, began working in September 1977 and joined the Party in 1983. He became deputy head of the Jiangxi provincial post bureau in 1998 and was made deputy head of the State Post Bureau in 2005.

In November 2006, Li became deputy general manager of China Post and served as China Post's general manager from 2011 to 2016. In July 2018, he became the general manager of China Unicom.

Li was placed under investigation in February 2022, expelled from the Party seven months later and arrested in November 2022.

In another development, Tian Huiyu, former president of China Merchants Bank, was charged with taking bribes, abuse of power and trading on undisclosed information by the People's Procuratorate of Changde, Hunan province.

Tian made use of his positions to seek benefits for companies and individuals in loan approval, business contracting, job transfer and other aspects, and accepted property from others.

He played favorites, committed irregularities and abused his power, causing a loss of the State's interests. He also disclosed information that had a material impact on the price of securities trading before the official release and expressly or implicitly asked others to engage in securities trading related to undisclosed information.

Tian, 57, is a native of Anhui province. He became vice president of the Bank of Shanghai in 2003 and worked for the China Construction Bank from December 2006 to May 2013. He served as president of China Merchants Bank from May 2013 to April 2022.

He was placed under investigation in April 2022, expelled from the Party and removed from his posts in October. SPP approved the arrest later that year.
