Let private enterprises power country's scientific progress

The National Development and Reform Commission, China's top economic planner, has issued a guideline regulation encouraging private capital to actively participate in the construction of the country's innovation platforms and supporting them to be included in major national scientific and technological projects with strategic importance.

In recent years, China has provided greater support for scientific and technological innovations at both the central and local levels, sharpening its edge to break Western technology blockades. It needs to continuously increase support for scientific and technological innovations to create an enabling environment for scientific research and business.

The report delivered to the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China pointed out that China will move faster to implement an innovation-driven development strategy, realize high-level scientific and technological self-reliance, and pool resources to achieve original and pioneering scientific and technological breakthroughs. Universities, research institutions, and State-owned and private enterprises are all the forces the country needs to rally for achieving this goal. Private enterprises have an ever-expanding scale and the ability to participate in the national development strategy, which when unleashed can help the country pool extensive forces to accelerate scientific and technological innovations.

China has cultivated a batch of competitive private technology enterprises with a strong sense of urgency, outstanding professional capacity, and greater enthusiasms for innovation. However, they also face problems such as increasing uncertainty in the international business environment and greater pressure for transformation and upgrading.

Supporting private enterprises participate in the country's innovation projects will not only help them play a bigger role in the national technology-driven development strategy, but also open a path for their high-quality development and create wider space for their contribution to the country's pursuit of technology self-reliance. To this end, more support should be given to private enterprises in terms of information, policy and environment sharing.
