Liaison Office: Civil Human Rights Front stews in its own juices on folding

The Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong SAR on Sunday expressed its support for the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government to follow up allegedly illegal actions by the Civil Human Rights Front.

The spokesperson for the office, in a statement after the front announced its decision to fold on Sunday, said the anti-China group has only itself to blame for its dissolution, as the illegal group has wantonly defied the rule of law over the years and brought harm to society.

The front was a downright illegal organization as it was never registered in accordance with the law and was unable to account for its source of funding, expenditures and bank account, the spokesperson said.

According to a statement by the police shortly after the front's announcement, the front has been operating illegally since its establishment in 2002, as it has neither registered as a company nor a legal society according to the Societies Ordinance.

The Front's decision was made at a specially convened general meeting on Friday and was adopted unanimously by all remaining members, the group said in a statement on Sunday.

The decision came as the group was under probe for alleged violations of the Societies Ordinance and the National Security Law for Hong Kong, as reported by some local media.

Over the years, the illegal group has stirred up trouble in Hong Kong in the name of human rights and freedom by inciting and organizing illegal assemblies. Some of these morphed into violent clashes against the government, the spokesperson noted.

They have colluded with anti-China troublemakers and foreign forces to challenge "one country, two systems" and the constitutional order of the SAR, dragging the city into the abyss of chaos, the statement continued.

In particular, they have brazenly encouraged its members to advocate separatism through its platform and issued letters with distorted facts to foreign consul generals in the city, the spokesperson said.

What the group did has caused a groundswell of disagreement in society and its disbandment was much-anticipated by many, the spokesperson said.

The office will support the SAR government and the police for taking law enforcement actions in accordance with the law.

On issues concerning the nation's fundamental interest and Hong Kong's long-term prosperity and stability, Hong Kong should spare every effort to safeguard its rule of law to ensure the overall benefits of the Hong Kong residents and the sustainable development of the "one country, two systems", the statement stressed.

With the implementation of the National Security Law and Hong Kong's return to order from chaos, there will be no future or room for maneuvering by anti-China troublemakers, the spokesperson emphasized.
