British ambassador’s biased article exposes double standards

The illogical and biased article published by British Ambassador to China Caroline Wilson has interfered in China's domestic affairs and exposed her double standards, the Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday.

In her article published on social media platform WeChat last week, Wilson said foreign media organizations, instead of targeting China only, are overseeing both their own governments and the Chinese government.

Wilson was summoned by a chief official with the Foreign Ministry's Department of European Affairs on Tuesday to receive a solemn protest over her article.

Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian told those at Wednesday's daily news conference that the article ignored the disinformation and fake news about China in the reports of British media, and deliberately confused slander in news with supervision on news.

Zhao stressed that the duty of diplomatic missions is to enhance the bilateral friendly relationship, and that diplomats have the obligation to refrain from interfering in the internal affairs of the country where they are positioned.

The article chose to turn a blind eye to the oppression of Chinese media outlets by foreign countries, and hyped up the "Western experience" with arrogance, making irresponsible remarks on China's political systems and media, Zhao noted.

It has exposed the double standards she adopted and deep-rooted ideological prejudice, he said.

Chinese Ambassador to the United Kingdom Liu Xiaoming has published some articles during his stay in the country, which introduced China and Sino-British relations in an objective and positive manner and clarified rumors targeting China, Zhao said.

His articles never tried to stir up trouble or attack the UK system, he added.
