Mischief-mongers, please note: Your tricks won't work

Editor's note: As China and the United States hold their 12th round of high-level economic and trade talks, some in the US are once again making irresponsible remarks to disrupt the main theme, saying China "always changes the deal in the end to its advantage", and it "is biding time to get a pretty good deal, as it has for the last 30 years, to continue to pillage the United States". Zhong Sheng, a columnist for People's Daily, comments:

The all-out effort by some in the US to confuse public opinion with irresponsible, and often illogical, remarks, is just a bid to scramble things to the US' advantage. However, the mischief-mongers seem to suffer from amnesia, having forgotten the promises they made to restart economic and trade negotiations on the basis of "equality and mutual respect".

They are only keen on extracting concessions from their negotiating partner. But they should know that for a country like China, which can withstand any hardship for a long time, any pressure will be to no avail.

China will never make unprincipled concessions, determined as it is to safeguard its core national interests and its people's fundamental interests.

Some in the US explicitly tell the world that the US never wants to lose, and claim that China wants to continue to "pillage" the US.

Such accusations turn a blind eye to the facts. China has never had an incentive, or carried out any actual action, to plunder other nations. And why would the US, the world's largest economy, allow itself to be plundered by China for 30 years?

As for the development of Sino-US economic and trade ties, the leaders of the two countries have arrived at a consensus, and people of both countries are eager to see cooperation in accordance with the direction set by their leaders.

In a fundamental sense, Sino-US economic and trade cooperation is mutually beneficial and win-win in nature. So, the harmony of Chinese and American people coming together in the spirit of friendship and cooperation will not change just because of the noises made by a few people in the US.

These people should keep in mind that China and the US have a huge convergence of interests, and only by holding a pragmatic approach as good partners can they resolve the ongoing dispute and achieve results to the advantage of both.
