More than 200 people gathered Saturday afternoon in front of the ruined site of Xuankou Middle School in Yingxiu town, Wenchuan county, Sichuan province, to mark the 10th anniversary of the Wenchuan earthquake.
Participants included Peng Peiyun, former vice-chairwoman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress; Peng Qinghua, Sichuan Party chief; Yin Li, Sichuan governor; and Carrier Lam, chief executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government. Foreign ambassadors, soldiers, health workers as well as primary and high students from Yingxiu were also involved in the ceremony.
They stood in silent tribute and offered yellow chrysanthemums to the quake victims and those who perished in the quake relief efforts.
Before the memorial ceremony started, Yin read a letter written by President Xi Jinping to the International Conference for the Decade Memory of the Wenchuan Earthquake and the Fourth International Conference on Continental Earthquakes, which opened in the Sichuan provincial capital of Chengdu on Saturday.
