Zheng Shusen, China's leading organ transplant expert and member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering was named a foreign member of France's National Academy of Medicine recently.

The successful election of Zheng, a native of Zhejiang's Longyou county and who now works at the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University, means the international recognition of his achievements in liver transplantation.

Zheng put forward the "Hangzhou standard" for liver transplantation in 2008, which gained much attention from global scholars. After strict tests, the standard was proved applicable in Western countries and was widely accepted by the global community. In 2010, Zheng led a team to Indonesia, to do operations on patients there, a move for closer international exchanges and cooperation.

The National Academy of Medicine in France, founded in 1820, is the top institute in the country's medicine sector and assumes the responsibility to provide suggestions for the country's health care policy. Since its founding nearly 200 years ago, the academy has enjoyed a high reputation in the international academic world and has cultivated a few laureates of Nobel Prize in medicine.

After his induction as a member of the top academy in France, Zheng said he will work to strengthen the ties with European medical institutes and scholars in the future, especially in the aspects of research cooperation, academic exchanges and talent cultivation.

Besides, he hopes by communicating with foreign experts, the "Hangzhou standard" could be further developed for more breakthroughs in liver transplantation.
