-- The Shenzhen Stock Exchange and Shanghai Stock Exchange open in December. The two establishments are welcomed as potential engines to drive China's market economy. Stock markets were previously reviled as a symbol of capitalism.

-- The State Council allows the Shanghai municipal government to develop its Pudong area. Preferential monetary policies are approved to facilitate its development.

-- Beijing hosts the 11th Asian Games.
